Overview

The Gulf War, also known as the Persian Gulf War, was a conflict waged by a U.N.-authorized coalition force from 34 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait in August 1990. The war is also known under other names, such as the First Gulf War, Kuwait War, First Iraq War, or Iraq War before the term "Iraq War" became identified instead with the 2003 Iraq War. The war lasted from August 2, 1990, to February 28, 1991, and was codenamed Operation Desert Storm by the U.S. military.

Outcome

The coalition forces achieved a swift and decisive victory, driving Iraqi forces out of Kuwait in just four days. The coalition forces then continued their assault into Iraq, eventually forcing a cease-fire and the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The war ended with a decisive victory for the coalition forces, who had managed to liberate Kuwait and restore its sovereignty.
