What is the irony in Absalom, Absalom?
The irony in the end is that the only Sutpen descendant left standing is Jim, the mentally handicapped illegitimate grandson of Thomas Sutpen. Control also plays a large role in the circular life of Thomas Sutpen. When he began in Jefferson, his control over his destiny insured his rise within the town.
