What is chromatolysis of the soma?
Neuronal axon damage can lead to retrograde damage to the cell body (soma) and consequently cause somal swelling. When this occurs, Nissl bodies are dissolved from the cell center and peripherally displaced along with the nucleus; this is referred to as central chromatolysis.
