In smooth muscle, by contrast, calcium binds to CaM, which then interacts with myosin light-chain kinase (MLCK), causing it to phosphorylate the myosin light-chain (MLC) at S19 or Y18. The phosphorylated MLC then forms cross-bridges with actin, producing phosphorylated actomyosin, which leads to contraction (Fig. 2C).
